Update Since Home Again

I see I'm getting very lax about this--haven't written for a while. Jim was discharged last Thursday--pretty weak and needs assistance to ambulate. His appetite was just returning when "BANG"--the big "D" strikes again!!! I'm convinced it's the chemo doing this to him, but NIH always wants a specimen to check for infectious diarrhea. We went in to NIH yesterday (Sunday) and spent the day while they drew blood and gave him a liter of IV fluids (electrolytes off). His numbers are all good and temp is normal, so we're just waiting for Thursday's evaluation and recommendations. I've been super tired getting up frequently in the nights so the kids are taking turns spending the night (Joe all day yesterday, Erin 11pm til 7 am last night, Mike will be tonight). Thanks everyone. Jim rests a lot during the day, but if anyone wants to visit Tuesday or Wednesday, just call me and I'll let you know when's a good time. Thanks for caring. Love, Barbara

  2. A Day in the Life.
I had a lovely visit yesterday, thank you M&D. I brought Charlotte over in the morning and my mom gave her a bottle, which she promptly drank. No problems. Dad and I chatted in the other room. Turns out Mom hears all we can say because the baby monitor is hooked up. Hi Mom. No need to reiterate when I went to see how she and Charlotte were doing. Then she took Ch-lotte for a walk. Dad and I chatted a bit about Sotomayor while I was reading the Ruth Bader Ginsberg article from NYTimes this weekend (he reading paper on the bed in TV room, me on the Barker Lounger in Greenie's room). The article had been marked RR, Recommended Reading, in Barb and Jim code. I think Mom enjoyed the walk and baby time as much as I enjoyed the time to complete an article. Aunt Louise called. Dad and I in living room cooing at Charlotte. Mom talked to her first, in the kitchen. Suddenly her voice dropped and I asked Dad, Can you hear her? (because I could) and he said, "Only when her voice drops. Then I know she's talking about me." We ate lunch together. Dad was physically weak but mentally there and wanted to hang out with us and move from room to room after an hour or so. His goal seemed to be to get a picture of Mom bonding with her twelfth grandchild. Thanks to the sibs who have spent the night.
    Love,
    Kath
